Physical Review Letters: Journal published by the American Physical Society, for rapid communications of new results. They're notoriously strict that all letters must be under four pages. This joke is hilarious if you're a physicist. Maybe.

Kate: Kate Nereid, girlfriend to HG's alter-ego, Jim Evans.

fullerenes: Large polyhedral cages of carbon atoms (e.g. C₆₀), originally named buckminsterfullerenes after the architect R. Buckminster Fuller. Also called "Bucky Balls", hence the joke.
